Loop or silicone earplugs: which one really to sleep?
Share
In the last few years, earplugs for sleeping have multiplied: Loop and its design filters, the ever-present disposable foam, and reusable soft silicone. They all "reduce noise" — but to sleep, and above all sleep on your side all night, they're not equal. Here's how to choose without getting it wrong.
What each type really does
Loop banks on reusable filters and a polished look. Originally designed for concerts, transport or concentration, some models stick out slightly from the canal — handy by day, less ideal when the ear is crushed against the pillow.
Foam is cheap and softens noise well, but it's disposable, soaks up moisture, and tends to come back out during the night. Over time, you rebuy it endlessly.
Soft silicone hugs the shape of the ear, washes and is reused for months. It's the profile best suited to a whole night — provided it stays low and genuinely soft.
The criterion we forget: sleeping on your side
Most of us sleep on our side. The earplug then ends up compressed between the ear and the pillow. A tip that sticks out creates an annoying pressure point, even painful on waking. For sleep, two things matter above all: a low profile and genuine softness.
Comfort over 8 hours
Worn for a few hours, almost anything is bearable. Worn for a whole night, the slightest pressure becomes uncomfortable. That's where the softness of the material makes the difference between an earplug you forget and one you take out at 3 a.m.
Soften, not remove
No earplug removes noise: it softens it and mutes it. Be wary of total-silence promises — what matters is pushing the disruptive noises (street, snoring, neighbours) into the background to protect your falling asleep and your cycles.
Hygiene and cost over time
A disposable earplug seems economical per unit, but rebought every week, it ends up expensive. A washable silicone rinses, stores in its case and goes with you for months — better for your budget as well as the planet.
So which to choose for sleeping?
For concentration or concerts, Loop makes sense. To sleep, especially on your side and all night, a low-profile soft silicone is generally the most comfortable and the most durable. That's exactly the approach of Core: a soft tip that adapts on its own and a discreet stem that doesn't stick out.
