Night shifts: how to sleep by day with earplugs
Share
Working nights means asking your body to sleep when the whole world is waking up. Between neighbours, traffic, deliveries and daylight, daytime sleep is a constant challenge. Here's how to take back control of your day-nights — and why noise is the first enemy to neutralise.
Why sleeping by day is so hard
Your internal clock is set by light: by day, your body gets the "stay awake" signal. Add to that a noisy environment at the hours you want to sleep. As a result, daytime sleep is often shorter and lighter than night-time sleep. The good news: you can trick the environment, even if you can't change the sun.
Step 1 — Make it dark
Light is the first wake signal. Blackout curtains, a sleep mask: creating darkness helps your body understand it's time to sleep, even at noon.
Step 2 — Neutralise the noise
This is the most neglected point. By day, the world is active: cars, voices, works, doorbells. You can't ask the whole neighbourhood to be quiet, but you can reduce what reaches your ears. For a night worker, earplugs are everyday equipment — not a gadget.
Since you sleep several hours with them, aim for comfort and hold. Core is designed for this: low-profile soft silicone (comfortable even on your side), a flexible stem that holds through your whole cycle, and a three-layer tip that softens daytime noise. Ideally combine with a light, constant background sound to smooth the peaks (a horn, roadworks).
Step 3 — Protect your window
Let those around you know your sleeping hours, mute notifications, and keep a regular window as much as possible. Consistency helps your body settle into this reversed rhythm.
Step 4 — Manage the return to light
On waking, expose yourself to light to feel alert. Conversely, on the morning trip home after work, sunglasses limit the "wake" signal and make it easier to fall asleep once home.
The "a pair that never lets you down" logic
When sleep is already hard, the worst is hunting for your earplugs or running out. Having a pair at home and a spare avoids nasty surprises: the Duo "Day & Night" covers this need, and the Trio "Palette" adds a pair for naps at work or trips.
In short
To sleep by day: make it dark, neutralise the noise, protect your window and manage your light exposure. Since noise is the hardest to control, comfortable, reliable earplugs make a real difference to the quality of your rest. Test them on your real cycles: that's what the 30-night trial is for.
Sleep in silence.
